ASSESSMENT AND REPORTING

The Progress made by pupils in all areas of the curriculum is a matter of concern to parents and teachers. Staff monitor the progress of individual children very closely and maintain a portfolio of their work throughout their school career. All parents are encouraged to take an active interest in their children's progress by attending open evenings. Parents are welcome to discuss their children's progress at other times as the need arises and should contact the class teacher to arrange a suitable time. A formal report is issued at the end of each academic year.

CHARGING

The Governors approve that voluntary contributions for school activities for which funding is not otherwise available will be requested and if these contributions do not cover the cost of the activity then it may have to be curtailed.

Contributions towards the cost of swimming and educational visits are essential if these activities are to continue. It is hoped that parents will support us in this policy.

RULES AND DISCIPLINE

Our aim is to help children to establish self-discipline, to create a situation in which children learn and organise themselves and their work, through which they can see the need to orderly, considerate to others and honest. This is not easy for the teacher to do alone. It involves giving the children the opportunity to behave in a self-disciplined way and supporting them while they learn how to manage themselves. This is very much what good parents do at home. The aim of all of us is to develop self-discipline in the young. In the case of behavioural problems we will seek to address the issue and work with parents as appropriate.

SEX EDUCATION

In year 6 we feel the pupils are ready for more formal sex education. The School nurse talks about puberty generally to the class, before the boys and girls have separate discussions concerning periods, bodily changes and the like. Any videos shown to the children can be viewed by the parents beforehand.

SPECIAL EDUCATIONAL NEEDS

If there are specific reasons for concern about progress, individual children may be tested to help with diagnosis of the problem. An individual scheme of work will then be set up to help overcome it, following full consultation with parents. The Educational Psychology Service is also available to help with assessment of special needs bu this would only happen with parents consent. Able children are offered opportunities to take part in various workshops organised by the LEA.

MISCELLANEOUS

PARKING

Parking on Roman Way is very limited. It is very important that parents observe yellow lines, and that they do not park on grass verges or across private driveways. School parents have been given permission by the Roman Palace to sue their car-park free of charge. There is therefor no excuse to park on zig-zag lines or to use the school car-parking facilities. Parental support is vital to maintain the goodwill of the local residents.

MOBILE PHONES

As a general rule children are not permitted to bring mobile phones into school. In exceptional circumstances they can be brought into the school office to be collected at the end of day, provided they are accompanied by an explanatory note. All phones are left at the owner's own risk

SCHOOL LUNCHES

In the absence of hot lunches, the children bring a packed lunch to school. For safety reasons children must not bring hot liquids, breakable thermos flasks of fizzy drinks to school.

If you think your child is eligible for a free school lunch please inform the school office so that necessary arrangements can be made.

MID-MORNING SNACKS

Children who wish may bring in a mid-morning fruit snack. This should be separate from the lunch box and in the interest of promoting health eating fruit only will be allowed, e.g. an apple, banana or raisins, that children can manage themselves.

All key stage 1 children receive free fruit everyday for their morning break and fruit is available for 50p per week for key stage 2 children also.
