Learning to debate

Today in school, our teaching teams are modelling to the children the process of debating a motion.

Eight members of staff passionately debated in front of the children in year groups 1, 2 and 3, modelling a range of different responses in relation to the motion 'everyone deserves respect' and the children had the opportunity to respond to their views as the debate was opened up to the floor. They learnt about listening carefully to each other, reflecting on the views they heard and articulating their own views in response.

Levels of engagement are high! Every child has an opinion and it's wonderful to see. In the days ahead we continue to support the children to learn how to present their views effectively and articulately using persuasive, formal language while also respecting one another's views!
